  57. Acrobat Reader 2.1 now runs under Windows NT 3.5 (or later), Windows 3.1, 
  58.  
  59. and Windows 95, as well as OS/2 2.11 or later in Windows compatibility 
  60.  
  61. mode. AdobeÆs ATM technology for rendering Type 1 fonts has been built 
  62.  
  63. into Acrobat Reader 2.1 for Windows so it is no longer necessary to install 
  64.  
  65. ATM on Windows systems. For Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, installing ATM is 
  66.  
  67. an option (not included with the Reader) that may improve performance of 
  68.  
  69. printing documents with Type 1 fonts to non-PostScript printers.

  73. Acrobat Reader 2.1 now accepts some specially enabled plug-ins, such as

  105. - To install Acrobat Reader 2.1 on your hard drive, from the Windows 
  106.  
  107. Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu; type

  111. - Follow the instructions on your screen.

  113. - Installation requires approximately 3 MB of free hard disk space.

  133. USING THE WEBLINK TOOL WITH ACROBAT READER

  137. To use the Weblink plug-in to follow links, you must set up your browser to
  138.  
  139. recognize Acrobat Reader. See the Adobe Home Page (http://www.adobe.com)
  140.  
  141. for information on configuring your browser to recognize PDF documents.

  145. To install the Weblink plug-in:
  146.  
  147.         1. Copy the Weblink plug-in to the Adobe Acrobat Plug-ins directory.
  148.  
  149.         If you just installed Acrobat Reader, the Weblink plug-in may
  150.  
  151.         already exist in the Plug-ins directory.
  152.  
  153.         2. Restart Acrobat Reader.
  154.  
  155.  
  156.  
  157. To select your Web browser:
  158.  
  159.         1. Choose Edit>Preferences>Weblink.
  160.  
  161.         2. Click Browse, then select your Web browse from the dialog box.
  162.  
  163.         3. Choose a Connection Type. Standard is the connection type for
  164.  
  165.         the supported browsers Netscape 1.1 and Spyglass Mosaic 2.0.
  166.  
  167.  
  168.  
  169. To open your web browser from Acrobat Reader click the Web browser button
  170.  
  171. in the toolbar. This feature fails intermittantly in Windows 95.
  172.  
  173.  
  174.  
  175. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  176.  
  177. ================
  178.  
  179. Errors During Acrobat Reader Installation
  180.  
  181. When launched, the Acrobat Reader installer (ACROREAD.EXE) makes a copy 
  182.  
  183. of the ACROREAD.EXE file in the temp directory specified in the 
  184.  
  185. AUTOEXEC.BAT file. When the drive and directory listed in the "Set temp=" 
  186.  
  187. line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file are invalid or you don't have write access 
  188.  
  189. to that drive and directory,or enough space on the drive, the Acrobat Reader 
  190.  
  191. installation fails, and returns the errors "Cannot load the language 
  192.  
  193. library", "Cannot load the license agreement", or "Not enough free disk 
  194.  
  195. space to continue installation".
  196.  
  197.  
  198.  
  199. Do one or more of the following: 
  200.  
  201. A. Ensure there is at least 4-8MB free disk space available on the hard 
  202.  
  203. drive onto which Acrobat Reader is being installed.
  204.  
  205. B. Ensure the "Set temp=" line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT is valid: 
  206.  
  207.  1. Open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in a text editor that saves as text-only 
  208.  
  209.  (e.g., Windows Write, Notepad). 
  210.  
  211.  2. Locate the line that reads "Set temp=" and verify the drive and 
  212.  
  213.  directory following the equal sign are valid. When the "Set temp=" 
  214.  
  215.  line points to an invalid drive or directory, edit the line to point 
  216.  
  217.  to a valid drive and directory, then save the file as text-only. 
  218.  
  219.  3. Reboot the computer.
  220.  
  221. C. Ensure you have write access to the drive where the TEMP directory 
  222.  
  223. is located.
  224.  
  225.  
  226.  
  227. Windows95
  228.  
  229. Installation From the Network -- If you set up a network server with 
  230.  
  231. the Acrobat Reader installation disk images (this problem does not occur 
  232.  
  233. with the single-file Reader Installer) so users can install Acrobat Reader 
  234.  
  235. over the network, the user installing the software must run the 
  236.  
  237. installation from a network drive that is mapped, not directly from the 
  238.  
  239. Network Neighborhood. The easist way to assign (map) a drive letter to a 
  240.  
  241. network computer or folder is as follows:
  242.  
  243.  
  244.  
  245. 1. On the Windows 95 desktop, right mouse click My Computer, and then 
  246.  
  247. click Map Network Drive. The Map Network Drive dialog appears.
  248.  
  249. 2. Select a Drive letter.
  250.  
  251. 3. Select a Path to the network server you want. 
  252.  
  253. For example:
  254.  
  255. \\computername\foldername
  256.  
  257. If a password is required, Windows prompts you. 
  258.  
  259.  
  260.  
  261. After the drive has been mapped, double click on My Computer to open the 
  262.  
  263. My Computer window. The drive name and letter you just mapped will be 
  264.  
  265. listed and can be used to navigate to the Acrobat Reader install disks.
  266.  
  267.  
  268.  
  269. Weblink Plug-in
  270.  
  271. - Spyglass Mosaic under Win32s crashes intermittantly when a download is
  272.  
  273. cancelled from Weblink.
  274.  
  275. - An invalid gopher URL (e.g. gopher://example.com/pub/test.pdf) will
  276.  
  277. download an error message as a text file with the PDF file name. Acrobat 
  278.  
  279. Reader will return the message "There was an error opening this document. 
  280.  
  281. File does not begin with %PDF-".
  282.  
  283. - If the web browser is busy contacting the host for over one minute,
  284.  
  285. Weblink will return the message "The web browser has not responded to
  286.  
  287. your request for over 1 minute: terminating request". The browser may
  288.  
  289. not respond to Weblink's attempt to cancel; use the web browser button
  290.  
  291. in the toolbar to activate the browser and manually cancel the request. 
  292.  
  293.  
  294.  
  295. PCL Printing 
  296.  
  297. The printer drivers shipped with Microsoft Windows 3.1 for the HP LaserJet 
  298.  
  299. III, IIID, IIIP, and IIISi printers may not work well with Acrobat Reader 
  300.  
  301. (and other applications for that matter). Adobe recommends you use a PCL 
  302.  
  303. printer driver based on the Universal Printer Driver V.3.1.2. Here are four 
  304.  
  305. ways to get this driver:
  306.  
  307.  
  308.  
  309. COMPUSERVE. Type ôGO MSLö to get to the Microsoft Software Library forum. 
  310.  
  311. Download the file named HPPCL5.EXE. Place this file on an empty, formatted 
  312.  
  313. DOS diskette then from DOS run the file to extract the driver and 
  314.  
  315. installation instructions which are in the file named printer.txt.
  316.  
  317.  
  318.  
  319. MICROSOFT'S BULLETIN BOARD. Microsoft's bulletin-board download service 
  320.  
  321. can be reached at 206-936-6735. It supports up to 9600 baud and you should 
  322.  
  323. set up your modem to use 8-bit, 1 stop bit, and no parity. Once connected, 
  324.  
  325. there is a menu-driven bulletin board. Download the file named "HPPCL5.EXE" 
  326.  
  327. and follow the same directions as above.
  328.  
  329.  
  330.  
  331. MICROSOFT. If you don't have a modem, you may call Microsoft directly at 
  332.  
  333. 206-637-7098 or 800-426-9400 and obtain the LaserJet III printer drivers 
  334.  
  335. on a diskette.
  336.  
  337.  
  338.  
  339. HEWLETT PACKARD. Again, if you don't have a modem, you may call Hewlett 
  340.  
  341. Packard directly at 303-353-7650 and obtain the LaserJet III printer 
  342.  
  343. drivers on a diskette. You may also use this number to obtain the latest 
  344.  
  345. printer drivers for the HP LaserJet 4, DeskJet, and PaintJet families of 
  346.  
  347. printers.
  348.  
  349.  
  350.  
  351. If you experience problems printing to HP LaserJet printers in the 600-dpi 
  352.  
  353. mode try switching back to 300-dpi mode or if it is equipped with a 
  354.  
  355. PostScript option, use the PostScript mode for 600-dpi printing. This 
  356.  
  357. 600-dpi PCL5 printing problem does not seem specific to Acrobat.
  358.  
  359.  
  360.  
  361. If outline-style text is printing incorrectly to a PCL printer (outlines 
  362.  
  363. printing on top of black characters) make the following change in the ATM 
  364.  
  365. Conrol Panel: check the option to "Print ATM Fonts as Graphics." 
  366.  
  367.  
  368.  
  369. To properly print certain special text effects (such as shadow, zoomed 
  370.  
  371. text, or outlined text) to non-PostScript printers it may be required to 
  372.  
  373. select the Print ATM Fonts as Graphics option in the ATM Control Panel. 
  374.  
  375. Certain printer drivers including the LaserJet PCL4 (Series II and higher), 
  376.  
  377. PCL5 (LaserJet III and LaserJet 4 families) and the Lexmark PPDS (4029 & 
  378.  
  379. 4029) always print black soft fonts on top of images and non-black text 
  380.  
  381. strings. 
  382.  
  383.  
  384.  
  385. Documents with various graphic images may not print correctly to the 
  386.  
  387. LaserJet 4 in PCL mode at 600 dpi unless the Graphics option in the Windows 
  388.  
  389. printer driver setup is set to Raster mode. 
  390.  
  391.  
  392.  
  393. To increase printer performance of documents formatted entirely in 
  394.  
  395. landscape orientation to non- PostScript printers the printer driver 
  396.  
  397. must be set in landscape orientation in the Windows printer setup. 
  398.  
  399.  
  400.  
  401. Postscript Printing
  402.  
  403. AdobePS 3.01 Driver  For best results when printing to PostScript printers, 
  404.  
  405. Adobe recommends you use the AdobePS 3.01 (or later) driver. The driver  
  406.  
  407. and installation instructions are included on the Acrobat Sampler CD.
  408.  
  409.  
  410.  
  411. AdobePS 2.1.1 Driver  You may experience problems when printing from 
  412.  
  413. Acrobat Reader 2.1 when using the AdobePS 2.1.1 printer driver. The 
  414.  
  415. problems occur in printing certain documents that use TrueType fonts 
  416.  
  417. or extended characters, such as typographic quote marks. A PSPrinter 
  418.  
  419. 2.1.2 update that fixes both of these problems is available. The AdobePS 
  420.  
  421. 2.1.2 update upgrades an installed version of AdobePS 2.1.1 to 2.1.2 
  422.  
  423. is available from the following sources:
  424.  
  425.  
  426.  
  427. COMPUSERVE.   Type GO ADOBE to get to the Adobe forum.
  428.  
  429.  
  430.  
  431. FTP.  AdobeÆs ftp Server is at ftp.adobe.com. The path to the updater is 
  432.  
  433. ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/Applications/Drivers/Windows/adobeps.exe
  434.  
  435.  
  436.  
  437. WORLD WIDE WEB. AdobeÆs World Wide Web server is at http://www.adobe.com.
  438.  
  439.  
  440.  
  441. PHONE.  Call 800-521-1976 to have the AdobePS 2.1.2 update disk sent to 
  442.  
  443. you directly. Shipping and handling charges may apply.
  444.  
  445.  
  446.  
  447. Note: The update is not the complete, standalone AdobePS 2.1.2 driver. 
  448.  
  449. It will only update a previously installed version of AdobePS 2.1.1.
  450.  
  451.  
  452.  
  453. Memory Issues. If you encounter problems, such as as VMerror, printing 
  454.  
  455. to PostScript Level 1 or 2 printers it may be because the printer has 
  456.  
  457. little available memory (for example, a non-upgraded LaserWriter, LaserWriter 
  458.  
  459. Plus, LaserWriter II NT or NTX). There are two potential solutions to this 
  460.  
  461. problem: 
  462.  
  463. 1/In the General Preferences dialog (select from the Edit/Preferences 
  464.  
  465. menu) you may choose to use Serif only or Sans only for font substituion. 
  466.  
  467. This frees up additional memory in the printer and chances are your 
  468.  
  469. document will print successfully. 
  470.  
  471. 2/The other option is to purchase more memory for your printer.
  472.  
  473.  
  474.  
  475. Apple Personal LaserWriter NT   If you are using an Apple Personal 
  476.  
  477. LaserWriter NT printer that has not been upgraded to a Personal 
  478.  
  479. LaserWriter NTR, Acrobat Reader won't be able to print substitute fonts. 
  480.  
  481. Contact your Apple dealer for information on upgrading your printer.
  482.  
  483.  
  484.  
  485. Miscellaneous Issues
  486.  
  487. CANON BJC 800 PRINTER In order to properly print text, graphics, and images 
  488.  
  489. to this printer be sure to check the Use Print Manager option in the Printers 
  490.  
  491. control panel. 
  492.  
  493. CANON LBP-8IV  Use the printers ôbitmap modeö for best results.
  494.  
  495. COMPAQ MGA8.DRV VIDEO DRIVER  Using this video driver (installed on Compaq 
  496.  
  497. DeskproXL 586 (1024x768, 640x480, 256 colors) with Compaq Qvision 2000 board 
  498.  
  499. may cause Acrobat Reader to crash. Solution: Turn off Page Caching in the 
  500.  
  501. Edit > Preferences > General dialog.
  502.  
  503. HP DESKJET 500C  This printer has an unprintable area near the top of the 
  504.  
  505. page. Be sure to use the Shrink to Fit option in Acrobat ReaderÆs Print 
  506.  
  507. dialog.
  508.  
  509. FONT NOT FOUND  A font not found error may indicate that ATM did not have 
  510.  
  511. enough memory to create a substitute font. See the Improving Performance 
  512.  
  513. section of this file for information on how to increase the memory available 
  514.  
  515. to ATM (if installed).
  516.  
  517. INSTALL  Due to problems with some Desktop Managers, during installation 
  518.  
  519. the Adobe Acrobat  program group and the Acrobat Reader program item may 
  520.  
  521. not be created. By default, the program is installed in the directory 
  522.  
  523. c:\acroread and the executable is c:\acroread\acroread.exe.
  524.  
  525. LOTUS NOTES  When you open an embedded PDF file from a Notes database, 
  526.  
  527. the Acrobat Reader window seems to flicker slightly. This is because Lotus 
  528.  
  529. Notes is giving Acrobat Reader OLE instructions to Show, Hide, then Show 
  530.  
  531. the PDF document.
  532.  
  533. MACH 32 VIDEO CARD FROM ATI  If you are using the MACH 32 ATI card, be 
  534.  
  535. sure to use the 256-color mode with the Color Pallette ON. In other words, 
  536.  
  537. do not use the 256-color mode with the color pallette off. For Acrobat, 
  538.  
  539. make sure the Pallette is ON. 
  540.  
  541. NEC ULTRALITE VERSA LINEAR DRIVER  Rotated images may display with artifacts 
  542.  
  543. when using the UltraLite Versa Linear 640x480 256 color video driver. 
  544.  
  545. Solution: Use the UltraLite Versa 640x480 256 color driver.
  546.  
  547. NUMBER 9 VIDEO DRIVER  When Acrobat ReaderÆs page caching is enabled, if 
  548.  
  549. you experience horizontal lines running across the page try turning off the 
  550.  
  551. turbo mode in the #9GXE video driver. This can be done via the Turbo menu 
  552.  
  553. in the program ô#9GXE Statusö available in the ô#9 Hawkeye Control 
  554.  
  555. Panel.
  556.  
  557. OLE  When viewing a PDF file which is an embedded OLE object, you can 
  558.  
  559. only perform an incremental save, not a full save. Operations which 
  560.  
  561. require a full size are things like inserting another PDF file. As a 
  562.  
  563. result, you cannot perform this operation on an embedded OLE object.
  564.  
  565. OS/2  Acrobat Reader should run in the Windows 3.1 compatibility mode 
  566.  
  567. of OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 2.1.1.
  568.  
  569. PAGE CACHING ù Page caching is disabled for 16-bit and 24-bit displays 
  570.  
  571. and the option is grayed out in the General Preferences dialog.
  572.  
  573. PATTERNS  Files produced by the Acrobat Distiller containing patterns 
  574.  
  575. may display slowly and cause memory shortages. This can often be the case 
  576.  
  577. when applications represent patterns as thousands of small Type 3 font 
  578.  
  579. characters. If you experience this problem, it is recommended to use 
  580.  
  581. color rather than pattern fills.
  582.  
  583. PC TOOLS FOR WINDOWS 1.0  No Adobe Acrobat group is created and no 
  584.  
  585. program items/icons are created. See INSTALL problem above for description 
  586.  
  587. of workaround. 
  588.  
  589. PHONENET  PhoneNet does not properly map Macintosh file names containing 
  590.  
  591. upper-ASCII characters. As a result, you will not be able to open any such 
  592.  
  593. files in Acrobat Reader. Solution: DonÆt use special characters in file 
  594.  
  595. names to be accessed by both Macintosh and Windows users over a 
  596.  
  597. PhoneNet network.
  598.  
  599. PRINTING FROM FILE MANAGER  Only one PDF file at a time can be selected 
  600.  
  601. and printed from the File Manager.
  602.  
  603. ROTATING PAGES  Rotating pages results in the loss of thumbnail images 
  604.  
  605. for those pages. You can regenerate the thumbnails by choosing 
  606.  
  607. Edit/Thumbnails/Create All. 
  608.  
  609. ROTATED/TRANSFORMED TRUETYPE FONTS  You may encounter some problems with 
  610.  
  611. displaying or printing rotated or otherwise transformed TrueType fonts. 
  612.  
  613. This is a limitation of TrueType and Windows. For best results, we recommend 
  614.  
  615. you use Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts in your documents. 
  616.  
  617. STANDARD MODE  Acrobat Reader 2.1 does not work in standard mode; you 
  618.  
  619. must be running Windows 3.1 in enhanced mode.
  620.  
  621. SYSHOOK  Syshook is an application that patches the system menus of 
  622.  
  623. applications; it does not work well with Acrobat Reader. 
  624.  
  625. TRUE TYPE  TrueType fonts cannot be reencoded. Because of this limitation, 
  626.  
  627. documents that were created using some special characters in a Type 1 font 
  628.  
  629. may not display correctly if a TrueType version of the font with the same 
  630.  
  631. name is installed on your system. When this happens, the error message 
  632.  
  633. ôSome text in the font and character 'FONTNAME ###' could not be displayed 
  634.  
  635. or printed correctly. The font could not be reencoded.ö is displayed. Since 
  636.  
  637. the Acrobat installers do not replace TrueType versions of Times, Helvetica, 
  638.  
  639. and Courier you may get this message with these fonts. Solution: Use the 
  640.  
  641. Custom Install option to install a Type 1 version of these fonts.
  642.  
  643. WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS  The Windows for Workgroups Netware extensions 
  644.  
  645. (\windows\netx.com) have been known to cause problems with Acrobat Reader's 
  646.  
  647. Open dialog, as well as other applicationÆs Open dialog. 
  648.  
  649. Solution: Contact Microsoft.
  650.  
  651. WRONG COLORS  If the colors on your monitor seem completely wrong, 
  652.  
  653. try the following. In the Acrobat Reader's ini file (c:\windows\acroread.ini) 
  654.  
  655. try changing the line 'IS8514=4' to 'IS8514=105'.
  656.  
  657.  
  658.  
  659.  
  660.  
  661. TO CREATE YOUR OWN PDF DOCUMENTS
  662.

  765. THIS IS A CONTRACT.  BY INDICATING YOUR ACCEPTANCE BELOW, YOU ACCEPT ALL THE

  769. This Adobe Systems Incorporated ("Adobe") End User License Agreement

  771. accompanies an Adobe software product and related explanatory written

  773. materials ("Software").

  775. The term "Software" shall also include any upgrades, modified versions or

  777. updates of the Software licensed to you by Adobe.  This copy of the Software

  779. is licensed to you as the end user.  You must read this Agreement carefully

  781. before indicating acceptance at the end of the text of this Agreement.

  783. If you do not agree with the terms and conditions of this Agreement, decline

  785. where instructed during installation, and you will not be able to use the

  787. Software. Adobe grants to you a nonexclusive license to use the Software,

  793. 1. Use of the Software. You may install the Software in a single location on

  811. 2. Copyright. The Software is owned by Adobe and its suppliers, and its

  817.    Copyright Law and International Treaty provisions.  You agree not to

  819.    modify, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or 
  820.  
  821.    otherwise attempt to discover the source code of 
  822.  
  823.    the Software.  You may use trademarks only to identify printed output 
  824.  
  825.    produced by the Software, in accordance with accepted trademark practice, 
  826.  
  827.    including identification of trademark owner's name.  Such use of any 
  828.  
  829.    trademark does not give you any rights of ownership in that trademark. 
  830.  
  831.    Except as stated above, this Agreement does not grant you any 
  832.  
  833.    intellectual property rights in the Software.

  837. 3. Transfer. You may not rent, lease, or sublicense the Software. You may, 
  838.  
  839.    however, transfer all your rights to use the Software to another person 
  840.  
  841.    or entity, provided that you transfer this Agreement with the Software.

  845. 4. No Warranty. The Software is being delivered to you AS IS and Adobe makes 
  846.  
  847.    no warranty as to its use or performance. ADOBE AND ITS SUPPLIERS DO NOT 
  848.  
  849.    AND CANNOT WARRANT THE PERFORMANCE OR RESULTS YOU MAY OBTAIN BY USING 
  850.  
  851.    THE SOFTWARE OR DOCUMENTATION. ADOBE AND ITS SUPPLIERS MAKE NO WARRANTIEs, 
  852.  
  853.    EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, AS TO NONINFRINGEMENT OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS,

  855.    MERCHANTABILITY, OR FITNESS FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE.  IN NO EVENT WILL

  857.    ADOBE OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL

  859.    OR SPECIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY LOST PROFITS OR LOST SAVINGS, EVEN IF

  861.    AN ADOBE REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH

  863.    DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY CLAIM BY ANY THIRD PARTY.

  865.    Some states or jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of

  867.    incidental, consequential or special damages, or the exclusion of implied

  869.    warranties or limitations on how long an implied warranty may last, so the

  871.    above limitations may not apply to you.

  875. 5. Governing Law and General Provisions. This Agreement will be governed by

  877.    the laws of the State of California U.S.A., excluding the application 
  878.  
  879.    of its conflicts of law rules.  This Agreement will not be governed by

  881.    the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale 
  882.  
  883.    of Goods, the application of which is expressly excluded.  If any part 
  884.  
  885.    of this Agreement is found void and unenforceable, it will not affect 
  886.  
  887.    the validity of the balance of the Agreement, which shall remain valid 
  888.  
  889.    and enforceable according to its terms.  You agree that the Software 
  890.  
  891.    will not be shipped, transferred or exported into any country or used 
  892.  
  893.    in any manner prohibited by the United States Export Administration

  895.    Act or any other export laws, restrictions or regulations.  This

  897.    Agreement shall automatically terminate upon failure by you to comply

  899.    with its terms.  This Agreement may only be

  901.    modified in writing signed by an authorized officer of Adobe.

  905. 6. Notice to Government End Users. If this product is acquired under the terms

  907.    of a:  GSA contract- Use, reproduction or disclosure is subject to the

  909.    restrictions set forth in the applicable ADP Schedule contract;

  911.    DoD contract- Use, duplication or disclosure by the Government is subject 
  912.  
  913.    to restrictions as set forth in subparagraph (c) (1) (ii) of 252.227-7013;

  915.    Civilian agency contract- Use, reproduction, or disclosure is subject
